ABOUT US

The  African Business Sustainability Council, Inc. (ABSUC), is an African  regional forum for advancing innovation, development, and communication  of best sustainability practices. Its membership promotes the  development of local, national, and regional capacity for applying  environmental, social, and ethical best practices in which sound science  and full public participation provide a foundation for equitable and  sustainable development. ABSUC supports individuals and organisations  involved in these and related disciplines by providing a forum for the  exchange of ideas and opportunities for collaboration and fosters a  regional network on best practices in the practice of sustainability for  informed decision-making regarding policies, programs, plans, and  projects in African countries.

ABSUC  was organised in 2020 to bring together companies, researchers,  practitioners, and users of various types of sustainability practices  from all parts of the continent. ABSUC involves people from many  disciplines and professions. Our members include corporate planners and  managers, public interest advocates, government planners and  administrators, private consultants and policy analysts, and university  and college teachers and their students.

Our Objectives: 

ABSUC activities seek to:

• develop approaches and practices for comprehensive and integrated practices for corporate sustainability
• improve sustainability procedures and methods for practical application
• promote training in environment, social and governance best practices, and public understanding of the field
• provide professional quality assurance by peer review and other means
• recognize excellence in the practice of sustainability in Africa, and 
• share information networks, timely publications, and professional meetings.

ABSUC’s Vision and Mission

ABSUC  is an organisation with a voluntary membership of professionals and  companies from diverse interests and organisations, all concerned with  environmental stewardship, social investment, corporate governance, and  sustainability. Collectively, our goal is to protect, not harm, the  earth and its environments and people and create impacts.

• ABSUC promotes the application of integrated and participatory  approaches to sustainability, conducted to the highest professional  standards.
• ABSUC believes the assessment of the environmental, social,  economic, cultural, and health   implications for proposals is  a critical contribution to sound decision-making processes and  equitable and sustainable development.
• ABSUC is committed to the promotion of sustainability, the freedom  of access to information, and the right of citizens to have a voice in  decisions that affect them. When we assess the impact of policies,  plans, programs, or projects, we promote the freedom of complete,  unbiased, and accurate information to decision-makers and affected  parties. 
• At ABSUC, we believe that sustainability should be inclusive and  comprehensive, addressing the broader social and health impacts as well  as any impacts on the biophysical environment. Respect for human rights  and human dignity should underpin all sustainability practices. We  acknowledge that we have a duty of care to both present and future  generations while creating impactful investments.
